Refund Advantage bank products can pay for SmartWiz. The office pays a 20% deposit by card, burns through those prepaid returns, and after that SmartWiz bills Refund Advantage weekly. Refund Advantage pays SmartWiz from your tax prep fees as clients get funded, so nothing more comes out of pocket after the deposit.
SmartWiz billing through Refund Advantage: the full sequence
Here is how the billing works when you choose Refund Advantage bank products as your payment method:
- Reserve your plan by paying the 20% deposit with a card. The deposit is card-only for now and gives you prepaid credits for 20% of your returns (10 returns on a 50-return plan, 20 returns on 100, and so on).
- Use those prepaid returns first. SmartWiz does not bill anything until you finish the prepaid credits.
- Once the prepaid returns run out, SmartWiz switches to weekly usage invoices sent directly to Refund Advantage.
- Refund Advantage pays SmartWiz from your tax preparation fees as your clients get funded. The charge waits until the refund comes through.
Because the cost comes from your prep fees, many preparers add a SmartWiz line item to the fee they charge the client. That way the expense is revenue-neutral instead of eating into the office margin. Pricing details at smartwiz.ai/pricing

Connecting SmartWiz to Refund Advantage
You connect SmartWiz to Refund Advantage during signup. The setup is done once:
- During SmartWiz signup, choose "pay by refund" as your payment method.
- Select Refund Advantage as your bank product provider.
- Provide your EFIN.
- SmartWiz verifies with Refund Advantage that you are approved to run bank products.
After the one-time setup, SmartWiz sends weekly invoices to Refund Advantage automatically, and Refund Advantage collects from your prep fees as clients get funded.
Unfunded refunds and rolled balances
Balances that cannot be collected roll forward. If a balance still cannot be collected after a few weeks, SmartWiz disables access to the account. Bank product eligibility and approval are determined by Refund Advantage, not by SmartWiz. SmartWiz makes no guarantees about refund timing, approval, or amounts.
Tax software compatibility
Refund Advantage bank products work with SmartWiz regardless of which tax software you run. SmartWiz supports TaxSlayer Pro Web, Drake, and OLT Pro. The bank product billing method is independent of your software choice. Your clients submit documents through Jotform, Cognito Forms, GoHighLevel, or direct upload; Wizzy processes and enters the data into your tax software; you review side by side and file. The billing path (Refund Advantage bank products versus card on file) does not change the return workflow.
FAQ
Can I pay for SmartWiz using Refund Advantage bank products?
Yes. You pay a 20% deposit by card at signup, use those prepaid returns first, and after that SmartWiz bills Refund Advantage weekly. The cost comes from your tax prep fees as clients get funded, so nothing more comes out of pocket after the deposit.
How does it work?
Pay the 20% deposit by card to reserve your plan. Use your prepaid returns. After those run out, SmartWiz sends weekly invoices to Refund Advantage, which pays SmartWiz from your tax preparation fees as refunds fund. The charge waits until the refund comes through.
Do I pay anything upfront?
Yes, the 20% deposit is required at signup and is paid by card. For the 50-return plan, the deposit is $200 for 10 prepaid returns. For 100 returns, it is $360 for 20 prepaid returns. After you use those, billing switches to Refund Advantage.
Does it cost more when I pay through Refund Advantage?
No. SmartWiz pricing per return is the same whether you pay by card or through Refund Advantage. 50–99 returns: $20 each. 100–199: $18. 200–999: $16. 1,000–2,499: $14. 2,500+: custom. See smartwiz.ai/pricing
What if the refund does not fund?
The balance rolls forward. If it still cannot be collected after a few weeks, SmartWiz disables access to the account. Bank product eligibility and approval are determined by Refund Advantage, not by SmartWiz.
Does this work with my tax software?
Yes. The Refund Advantage billing method works regardless of your tax software. SmartWiz supports TaxSlayer Pro Web, Drake, and OLT Pro. The bank product payment choice is independent of your software.
Do both clients and preparers need Refund Advantage?
No. You (the preparer) choose to pay SmartWiz through Refund Advantage. Your clients choose their own refund method—bank product, direct deposit, or paper check. The two choices are separate. SmartWiz bills Refund Advantage from your prep fees as clients get funded through bank products.
How do I add the SmartWiz cost to my client fee?
Many preparers add a line item to their tax preparation fee to cover the SmartWiz cost. That way the SmartWiz expense passes through to the client rather than coming from the office margin. The exact line-item wording and amount are your choice.
