What Is SmartWiz? How the AI Tax Automation Assistant Works

Last updated: October 14, 2026

SmartWiz is an AI assistant that automates tax return data entry inside professional tax software. Here is what it does, how it works, and what it costs.

SmartWiz is an AI assistant that automates tax return data entry inside professional tax software, including TaxSlayer Pro Web, Drake, OLT Pro, and CrossLink Online. Its assistant, Wizzy, reads client tax documents, builds the client profile, and enters the data directly into the return, so the preparer's job shifts from typing to reviewing. SmartWiz is built for professional tax preparers and tax offices, not for individual taxpayers filing their own returns.

Where SmartWiz came from

SmartWiz was built by people who ran their own tax business first. The team prepared returns at volume, lived the data entry bottleneck through real tax seasons, and built Wizzy to remove it. That history shapes the product: it works inside the tax software preparers already use rather than asking offices to switch platforms, because switching software mid-career is the one thing most preparers will not do.

How SmartWiz works

Upload a client's documents into SmartWiz however you have them: one combined PDF or a stack of separate files (PDFs, photos, scans, Excel, or CSV). SmartWiz also takes your intake forms and client organizers, plus data from your favorite intake tools like Jotform, Cognito Forms, and GoHighLevel. Wizzy reads every page, splits a combined PDF into individual documents while keeping the original together, and sorts and renames each one by taxpayer, form type, issuer, and tax year. It reads source documents like W-2s, 1099s, and K-1s, as well as Schedule C and Schedule E intake forms, and builds a client profile you review and edit before export. Before export, Wizzy flags things you may want to fix, like a W-2 address that differs from the driver's license, so you pick the right one. For returning clients whose info is carried forward, Wizzy never overwrites existing data—it only adds the new information. Then One-Click Return exports it into your tax software (TaxSlayer Pro Web, Drake, OLT Pro, or CrossLink Online) in about 3–5 minutes, where you review side by side and file.

What Wizzy actually does

  1. Reads client documents. W-2s, 1099s, organizers, brokerage statements, as PDFs, photos, or scans. Intake tools JotForm, Cognito Forms, and GoHighLevel connect directly.
  2. Builds the client profile. Processing takes about 3–5 minutes per client depending on document count.
  3. Enters the data into the return. One-Click Return puts the data into the correct fields inside your tax software, and creates the client profile there for new clients.
  4. Shows its work. A side-by-side review puts every entered figure next to the source document. Anything Wizzy was not confident about is flagged for the preparer first.
  5. Steps back. Wizzy does not e-file and does not make tax judgments. The preparer reviews, decides, finishes, and files.

Returns run in parallel, so an office can queue several clients and come back to finished entry on all of them. A return that takes most of an hour to key by hand typically takes under five minutes of hands-on time.

What SmartWiz covers today

Individual 1040 federal and state returns in all 50 states, including Schedule C, capital gains, K-1s, Schedule B, and 1099 income. The full form list is on the supported forms page.

Security

SmartWiz is audited to SOC 2 Type I. Client data is encrypted in transit and at rest, personally identifiable information is encrypted so it is not readable in plain text even internally, and SmartWiz does not train AI models on client data. Full details at smartwiz.ai/security.

Pricing

Pay as you go: a 20% deposit reserves your plan, then you pay based on actual usage through weekly invoices to your card or through bank products. It is not a payment plan or financing. A return unlocked for a client can be re-run as needed at no extra charge, and adding a forgotten document does not use another credit. Only a separate tax year uses another credit. FAQ

Is SmartWiz legit?

SmartWiz is used by professional tax offices today, is audited to SOC 2 Type I, and publishes its security posture at smartwiz.ai/security. The full walkthrough video above shows the product working end to end on a real return.

Does SmartWiz replace my tax software?

No. SmartWiz works inside your existing tax software. You keep your software, your workflow, and your filing process; Wizzy does the keying.

Does SmartWiz replace preparers?

No. It removes data entry, which is the part of the job that is neither judgment nor client service. Preparers review, decide, and file.

Who is SmartWiz for?

Professional tax preparers and tax offices, from solo preparers to multi-preparer shops and service bureaus. It is not a consumer tax filing product.

Can I upload one big PDF?

Yes. You can upload one combined PDF with all of a client's documents, or many separate files. Wizzy reads every page, splits the combined PDF into individual documents (W-2, 1099-INT, driver's license) while keeping the original together, and sorts and renames each one by taxpayer, form type, issuer, and tax year.

What intake methods does SmartWiz accept?

Upload documents directly (one combined PDF or separate files), use your intake forms and client organizers, or connect your favorite intake tools like Jotform, Cognito Forms, and GoHighLevel. All paths lead to the same client profile review and One-Click Return.

Does processing use a credit every time?

One credit unlocks a client. Re-running that client is free, and adding a forgotten document does not use another credit. Only a separate tax year uses another credit.
