The return at a glance

A single filer with one W-2, stock sales on a 1099-B, a consolidated 1099 with dividends and a 1098-T. No dependents and no direct deposit details. The session starts with where to get help in SmartWiz, then runs the return into TaxSlayer and runs it again with a second client in TaxWise using bulk one-click.

Run it yourself with Wizzy

  1. 1

    Know where to get help.

Open the Help Center from the left side of the SmartWiz web app. It has how-to videos, step-by-step articles with pictures and a chat that answers from those articles. The help icon in the extension opens a chat with real people. Messages sent overnight get answered first thing in the morning. You can also book a one-on-one call.

  2. 2

    Look before you upload.

Wizzy works best with the context you give it. A junior assistant handed one W-2 couldn't finish a return, and neither can Wizzy. Take a quick look at the documents so you know the situation, and make sure your intake asks every question the return needs. Use an organizer every year.

  3. 3

Upload a zip or loose files.

Open the extension, choose Add a Client, scroll to the box at the bottom and drag the files in. A zip works, but it takes longer because Wizzy unzips it. Here the zip didn't process cleanly, so the files went in loose. PDFs, PNGs, JPEGs and CSVs can go in together. A 300- to 400-page upload works too; expect 30 to 40 minutes.

  4. 4

Add a missing document after processing.

Wait until Wizzy has built the profile, then use the upload button on the client. You can't add a document while Wizzy is processing or exporting. Wizzy re-sorts the return to include it. If you already ran the return, run just that document so the rest isn't touched.

  5. 5

Review the profile before you run.

Green icons show the sections Wizzy found inside a long PDF, like the 1099-DIV on this consolidated form. A line through the 1099-INT means it rounds to zero: under 50 cents rounds down. Edit any field you need, like the SSN or date of birth. Click What will get exported to see what Wizzy will and won't enter. Settings > Supported forms lists what is ready for your software.

  6. 6

Returning clients: check the software first.

For a returning client, upload only what is new. Wizzy adds the new forms and assumes everything carried forward in the software is correct. If the address or date of birth is missing in the software, the run will be affected.

  7. 7

    One-click, then leave feedback.

Open TaxSlayer and press Run One Click. A missing direct deposit gets a warning but doesn't stop the run. When Wizzy finishes, say what happened, good or bad. Wizzy is only as good as the feedback you give it. For practice returns, say it's a sample in feedback or support chat and ask for your credits back.

  8. 8

    Run several clients at once.

Once the profiles are clean, select the clients and run bulk one-click. Up to 10 run that way; this run was in TaxWise. Don't touch the window Wizzy is working in. Open a new window if you need to keep working.
